I am in love!

I want to move here, away from Dreven. Keep the kids with me and retire at Lake Turnan.
Someday's I have a good idea, this was one of my better one. I wish Brom could see Geron right now. He been running for days, finally able to move without the always present guard and without a care in the world.

Is it so wrong of me to regret it a little that I took Geron out of Arboria? Yes, he gets to see me all the time yet, but is the trade-off worth it? Brom is not around as much as I would like, and Geron at times does not even care if he is here or not. I always have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind something may happen to him because I am his mother. I hate to have to restrict his freedom not only because of me but because of that he is. He has one foot in each world. Can he be truly happy one day?

In three days we have to return to Dreven again. Right now I am not sure who is dreading it more, the kids or me.

End of Hazel1275

Aslin of Dreven is back.

I am not sure how to feel about this. I am happy she is alive and has returned, but I fear this will not only be an upsetting experience for her but quite a few other.

I let Kai handle Dolek, I just inform him of her return and go into hiding till the worst of this blows over.

On more upsetting news, a Klockwork Captain is running around in Dreven. Not only this he is sneaking around the Princesses, he also had the nerve to tell me I am hated in Dreven because I am part of the Usurper Council. Fine, if I were a Klock I would hate me. After all, I did take part in making sure their little Regime finally got knocked over. I behave, I even had a very civil conversation with him and ended having to defend him. He has a right to move around Dreven unhindered until he brakes a law. I will not sink to their level going around arresting and murdering people just because their belief or opinion is not the same as mine.

Who is more annoying him or Knowles?
If I have to witness one more of his little love spars I am going to hide in the cellar to have a drink.
I have never meet a man as moody as the Baron. This dark cloud always hangs over his head.

Adron is still not home. I try not to worry, but it gets harder with every Tenday that passes without a word.

Beginning of Hazel 1275

Adron is off to Waterdeep once again, with luck he will not get himself killed.
Brom is gone with the Gillies, and I am holding things together back here in Dreven.
Trade has started to pick up over the summer, and so has the Company Business.

One should be thankful, this is turning out to be a good year for us.

Raf has not been the same since the end of the War with the Therm's. Too many things on his mind I guess.
I been trying to catch up with some more paperwork that has piled up on my desk.

I miss Ami. I miss her a lot, and she could write more. Honestly, she is worse than I.

Baron Knowles is back in Dreven. Baron- General, oh goodness that a title. That man is such an annoyance. Who does he think he is? March into Dreven and think we be impressed with his title?
Strange timing, just after we defended Shadokhan soil, on of Therm's so called finest chooses to come back to Dreven and make a claim on his old lands. Maybe somebody should remind him not so gentle we also just had a Revolution and half of Shadokhan is yet to be peaceful again.

I do wonder how Raf will take him. I have arranged for an appointment. This is as much as this Baron is going to get out of me.

Jakob is starting to worry me. Something is going on he is not telling me about. I know he spends most of his off duty time in Dreven, almost always near the River District.
I will see if Kilmek can get it out of him. I do not want him in trouble.

Hawthorn 1275

We are going to War.

Done, final. Brom has committed the troops. Adron and I will ride with the Stewards men. Brom will bring up his scouts from the Ashmakers flank.

I considered sending Geron back to Arboria. See him safe. Brom changed my mind, he is right. Geron is just as safe here at the Keep. If our lines shall falter and the Ashmakers advance towards Dreven, the men left at the Keep will take him, and the other children, and head towards the mountains.

Kai may stay back in Dreven. I am sure this may be one why he has been in such a sour mood. Why keep him back? Does Raf think truly everything will turn out so badly for us? I am sure the City Guard could handle an evacuation of Dreven if it needs to be done.

I wonder if I will even have time to breath in the next tendays? Things need to be done in a hurry. An Army does not march well on an empty stomach. I suspect a few merchant want to take advantage of this situation and raise prices on us. They will be in for a nasty surprise.

Adron and I had no time alone together. For sure we will not get a moment until this is all over.

Gaia help us all.

End of Alder 1275

Oh dear Gaia!

I was starting to settle all my emotions and honestly just wished to enjoy the company of my dear friends.
Old friends, new friends, just the comfort of good and honest company and a few light hearted jokes.
Did this joke ever turn on me.

It was to be for fun, a few jokes between friends. What can one kiss do to you? Surprise you yes, but the second and third one turned my world upside down.

Adron kissed me.

The first was just to surprise me, and get under my skin. He likes to taunt and tease me.
The second was a joke to see how I taste.
The third was not.

How many years have we been friends? Long enough to almost forget the time then I first arrived in Dreven. How smitten I was with him so long ago. How long ago since I had Forgotten the pain of my first crush. Time to grow up alongside him and become fast friends.

We settled this in True Adron fashion.

Buckled up and went straight to Brom to inform him about this kiss before word started to spread.
Both of us agreed to take things very slow from now on. No need to rush. I still need time to heal, and I think he needs time to get used to seeing me as something besides his little oh so annoying Kendra.

Maybe not it was not a wise choice. I had to do it. My journal looks rather messy now, with the torn pages.
I had to rip them out and ride myself of all this sorrow, pain, deceit and foulness in my life.

How close did I walk the path to madness again? Should I grief more? The only time I allowed myself a good cry was at the side of Xiph. Words did not need to be spoken between the two of us. We are both caught between anger, pain and indescribable sorrow. His touch and words smoothed wounds. I hope I could calm his soul in return, at least for a few moment.

Keran and I made peace. There is no need to pursue this any further. I will not allow myself to be eaten up by anger and pride again.

Adron and Soledaad took down the assassin. They are revenged at last.

Things always tend to take a turn to the worse after I manage to steal a moment of happiness for myself.

Keran is in Dreven. His arrival was less than pleasant, not only did he have words with Brom over him sending one of his scouts to see Geron, he also threatened him if he ever sets foot near him again he would make sure it was his last breath. Brom does not react well to threats, and since we have gone our separate ways in our personal lives he will not put up with the many moods for my brother. Not that I can blame him.

Mordred was also informed about the great displeasure my brother takes of him seeking my company. Keran reminded me that his marriage is not over under our laws, no matter that Mordred may say. I am not so sure now? Who is right. Mordred or Keran?

Keran knows, worse Keran told everybody present in the Tavern. Thank you Brother, I really wanted to air all my secrets in public.Brom would not even look at me, Mordred quickly decided it had to be his.

I wish Xiph was here and not off again. I know he needs to travel and cannot stay long enough in one place. What am I to do now, I cannot say a word. Even Mik will end being dragged into this mess somehow. It looks my brother has made up his mind to upset any who are or were close to me.

Brom

The Keep, he has his beloved Keep back. I signed the papers and gave it to him today.
Part of me wanted to rip this paper apart and yell at him.

I got demoted.
He says it is to easy my burden so I can concentrate on my business in Dreven more.

I have lost most of my men, men I trained and went through hell with during the Rebellion.
He says it is in my best interest that I do not have to worry about them. Besides I still have some left under my direct command.

He said I always have his friendship.
I know I would not loose that we had before we fell for each other.

He said he does not want me to break apart again.
I think it is to late, I am already broken in many little parts.

He said he will see me on the road.
I think he does not want to come down the same road anymore.

I still love him, I will always love him, but we just cannot be together. That chance has passed, and will never return.

Sometimes you find a rare pearl.

I did so last summer. She was sitting by the bridges near the market, selling fruits her family grew for a few coppers. A few words at first, soon we were spending more and more time just talking. Maybe it is because she sees the world different then the rest of us. She was born blind, but by all means does not think of an hindrance in her life. Rather the opposite. She listens more than the rest of us do.

Wise beyond her young years one could call her. Once again our conversation gave me some inside in my own heart. I am thankful I have her in my life.

Lin stopped by again on his way back to Arboria. It is refreshing to catch up with an old friend of my brother. The two of them had always been very close. I truly wish he could have stayed longer than a few days, but the seasons are turning and it is time for him to make his journey back home.

I made sure he took a few things with him for Keran. I miss my big brother, even if we hardly ever get along anymore. He is still sour of my decision to return to Dreven and for wanting to bring Geron with me. Why does he not understand he needs to come to get to know his father. Lin was not too happy hearing Brom and I have separated for good. What should I say? The rebellion came at a high cost. I lost my best man, and my lover. Brom is still my friend and partner, but I think it will take some time to heal for both of us.
He does have a cooler head than I, while he chooses to distract himself with the Company, I once again find myself distracted by something completely different.

At least Mordred is in a much better mood now.

I have my own office. I now have my own little place in Taysayad Keep. I cannot remember how often I have look at these walls and wondered that went on inside of them.

Now I know. For one a lot of stairs, a quite a few long and boring hallways. Kai's office is higher up than mine, he also has a larger window! I should not be jealous he is spending many more hours here than I.

I found a vase with fresh flowers on my desk this morning, I wonder who left them for me. It was a very pleasant surprise. It was not Mordred, he would have asked about them tonight.

I am still not sure about him, there is this strange attraction between us. One the ride home I asked him about his wife. He got down right defensive and told me there is nothing to say, they had separated and would go their own paths. For sure he does not want to indulge me in the details.

Cut and Run March 2005

"This is it?" Kendra turned towards Janus with big eyes. She did look a bit disappointed as the port town came into view, and more so as they found their way through the narrow streets to the harbor. The city did not look very large, or important. Kendra expected larger Stonehouses, clean wide streets and more colorful and vivid life near the harbor. She puzzled at the small wooden structures and was surprised at the filth in the streets and the smell that drifted up from the sea. Most people rushed past them on their daily business. Kendra pulled the hood of her cloak deeper into her face and got smaller.

"Now, now, remember it was not too long ago the Tsunami ravaged the coastline, and then the sickness came, and the new rule came, and..."

She held up her hand. "Enough already. Just because Arboria has chosen to be more vigilant with her borders does not mean we did not pay attention to the rest of the world. I just pictured a Port different in my mind. I have read too many books, I guess...I thought it would be more majestic and vivid with exotic life."

"One more reason for me not to read books." He grinned at her. "Clouds up your mind with too many fantasies."

Kendra snorted at him and moved her horse ahead.

"I think it is time to get this behind us, Janus. Oh dear, do you smell this? Is this coming from the water? It reeks of dead things."

"Hush, Kendra. How much more attention do you wish to draw to us?" Janus did choke back a little laughter as he looked at her. Her nose had wrinkled up and she pushed it deeper in the folds of her cloak to escape the strange new smells.

"This has to be it." Kendra pointed out the Inn on the western side of the Harbor. It looked shabby from the outside and she noticed a few rough-looking men standing on the outside talking amongst themselves as they watched the two riders approach the Inn. One of them turned away quickly and headed inside while the other stepped aside from the door and continued to watch them.

"Dockworkers, Ken. Nothing to worry about." Janus dismounted and held her horse so she could do the same.
She placed her hand on his shoulder for a brief second to assure him she was not worried yet. Janus secured the horses. It was not in their plans to stay longer than necessary.

Something made his skin crawl--the feeling of being watched very closely could even get to him at times. This was more than just an innocent, courious interest in strangers. Something darker was in the air. He straightened himself out and stepped ahead of the elf to open the door for her. He would watch her like a hawk in this place. Nobody would get the chance to approach her unnoticed.

A dark musky commons greeted them as the door shut behind them.

"Let us find our man, Janus. We have come this far; we will not turn back now."

"Oh and because of THAT we do not teach them the proper way now!"
Janus winced and escaped to the other side of the room. It was not a smart move on his part to mumble while standing so close to Kendra. Her ears were good for a few things, once in a while.

"Let me make you some tea." Janus escaped towards the small room on the other side of the cabin to fetch tea.

Kendra sat down, straightened out her little table and let Janus go on with his business of fetching tea. He was happy to be out of the line of fire for a brief moment.
Kilmek came out of his corner and joined her at the table.

"Please tell me you got the bow strings I needed, Kilmek."
She leaned forward, put her elbows on the tabletop and began to rub her temples.

He nodded."Sure did, left them in the armory up at the keep for you. Want me to get the green one's later and start them on their bows?"

She did not look up as she spoke. " Nay Kilmek, I will do it."
Janus brought the tea and set down cups for Kendra and Kilmek. He chose to stand next to her and drink his while standing up.

"Thank you, Janus." She reached for the mug and sat up straight again.
"Are there any maps at the keep I can copy? I forgot where Brom keeps his good ones hidden."

"He should be back soon, think you can wait a day or two?"

"I think I have no choice. I hate going through his things while he is not there. I guess it has wait a little longer."

"Maybe you should take a day off, Kendra." Kilmek and Janus said almost in unison.

She sipped her tea and thought. Just a few days ago Adron had taken her aside and suggested she had spent too much time delegating tasks and it was time she stepped up a little.

She had thrown herself into work right away. Days were spent with the trainees, starting with archery practice in the morning, riding lessons, and reading and writing lessons in the afternoon. Kendra was surprised to learn how some of the new folks lacked skills in this area. Every other day she pushed the trainees to learn the basic skills of the sword; how good are archers if they cannot defend themselves should an enemy get a chance to advance towards their line. After the evening meals Kendra tended to disappear from the Keep and travel the city or surrounding countryside. With Brom once again off to war in a different Realm, she had the chance to explore without being missed until the morning. The Wolves just thought their Captain preferred the solitude of her cabin instead of living inside the Keep.

To be honest, her change in routine had not only been triggered by Adron's comment. Something much darker was on her mind and it was nagging at her.
Was it pure coincidence Falan had turned up again in the Tavern and spoke of dark times, and Hammer had all of a sudden chosen to return as well? She always thought of Hammer as bad news but the older elf had surprised her by offering his help. Kendra was sure he knew something she did not know yet. Falan she trusted, but Hammer, on the other hand confused her.

She send both men back to the Keep soon after they finished the tea. Kilmek was to look for better maps and Janus would make sure all their new charges had returned after enjoying a day off.
Kendra went to work the instant they had turned the corner and headed down the path which led away from her cabin. She hid her hair under a shoulder-long black wig, carefully secured to hide most of her ears underneath the shaggy, thick hair. Her chosen outfit for tonight had seen better days. Manny places were patched or worn. She had also taken the precaution of binding down her breasts. All she needed now was a little dirt on her face to gain the appearance of a young man down on his luck. Her horse would stay put in her small barn--she had arranged with a Farmer to borrow his old pony from time to time. He did not mind, and she paid him well enough to keep it to himself. Finally, she carefully hid a dagger, patting down her shirt to make sure the imprint of the hilt would not betray her.

Just as the sun set she was on her way to Dreven and the River District. Her chosen target tonight was a run-down tavern called the Sly Fox, known for its cheap drink, easy women and frequent brawls. The Owner was known to her and a few well placed coins would loosen his tongue. She wanted to find out more about the recent fire. Rumors were flying and the new edition of the Dreven Gazette had added to the confusion.
Somebody was trying to hit the Klock Master where it hurt, and that somebody was the person Kendra was after.

Little Treasures Jan 2005

The dapple-gray chewed at the bit and shook his large head. Steam rose from the horse's back as he stood on the ridge that allowed his rider to survey the land below them. The morning sun had not chased the chill from the frigid air. Fog lay in the meadows below, giving the farmland beneath the mountains the appearance of a sleepy and peaceful world.

Sturrbith Mountains towered behind them and the terrain spreading before them would be a much easier ride for man and beast alike. All four riders had cursed the timing of the mission to the Luminii coast. Bitewind was not a favorite time of the year for anyone to leave the warm walls of home behind and trade them for freezing days and nights in the countryside.

The leader gave the signal and the riders turned back to the narrow path which led down the ridge. Maybe the midday meal could be taken in an inn and give all of them the chance to feel warm again. Certainly the horses would be have to be exchanged during the day if their leader wished to keep up the grueling pace she had set for them since leaving the Keep in Shadokhan. It was to be a simple mission for the Black Wolves.

One of Brom’s merchant contacts in Ashwood needed a small shipment which included some papers transferred from Dreven in a hurry.

At least that was what had been told to the other three riders in her company. What would happen next was that she would be kind enough to help out the friendly merchant in Ashwood and route a little package for his nephew to the port town of Kustton. The sealed package in question was of course already secure in her saddlebag.

It was a little maneuver to keep the men safer; what they did not know about could not harm them. Besides, for now everything was in the first stages of planning. It was just a too good an opportunity for Kendra to pass up. Nobody would question why she went to Luminii; it was official company business for the most part. And maybe just a little unofficial one tacked on to the end of the trip.

Midday came and passed; the four got a chance to warm up at an Inn and exchange horses before heading out on the trail again.
Kendra had kept to herself and had been rather closemouthed during the expedition so far. The men still tread softly around her--they were not so sure just what to think about their new Captain.

It had been in the end of Goldfall that they had gotten their first glimpse of the woman. Rumor had been that Brom Stoneheart had appointed a new Captain to the Black Wolves. It caused quite a stir, since a few had hoped to be promoted through the ranks, and now suddenly a Newcomer had received the rank. Brom would not spill the beans on just who the new Captain was; it was up to her to make her first appearance. After all, she was the one who would have to lead the men at one point or the other and she had to earn their trust first.
Only a few close to him knew who had come back. One of them was the Weapons Master, and he had a few things planned for her.

So one morning, right after the recruits had gathered to train outside the armory, it was time for Kendra to face the music.
Adron had finished her training years ago but she knew she had to prove herself to him and the others before starting to take on missions again. She sent a prayer skyward before she stepped up the path. Adron would not take it easy on her.
Kendra had chosen her old worn leather breeches, vest and a dark green shirt. Her heart pounded hard in her chest as she approached the corral the men were training in.

She took a deep breath and composed herself before she addressed Adron.
"Captain Rulyar wishes to enter the ring for training." Her voice ran loud and clear across the corral, and then she waited for his answer.
Some recruits made the fatal mistake and stopped their exercises the moment they heard her request. Adron's second made sure they had only a moment to stare at the new arrival before they were chased back to resume drill.

Adron did not miss a beat and lifted his hand to wave her inside the ring.
"Rulyar may enter the ring." He moved to meet her. "I was expecting you, Kendra. You are late, and the sun has been up for over a candle mark. For that you will run ten laps to warm up!"

How quickly word can spread on the stronghold is an enigma, but during Kendra's warm up quite a few gathered to take a glance at the new Captain. Some remembered her and others watched the elf with interest.
She came to a stop and faced Adron with a little salute.
"Well now, let's see how much you have forgotten in the last few years, Kendra." Adron addressed her in a stern voice.” Ian," he called out to his second. "Bring a long sword for the New Captain and the usual for me."

The crowd hushed. It was not often the Weapons Master allowed live steel inside his ring.
"Kendra, attention!" She took her pose across from him and waited for his first move. She would be on the defense at first and she expected a beating.

The dance began and Kendra balanced her sword before moving to meet his blade. Back and forth they went. All too quickly Adron spotted her weak left and the broad side of his sword came to meet her leg.
"You are leaving yourself wide open! Pay attention, girl." And another smack of his sword to her hip, a painful reminder she needed to move faster.
"Switch hands and attack!" Kendra had already worked up a sweat defending and now it was her turn to attack. Adron also wanted to test her other arm. He had always taught her to be efficient with both since she needed to be able to defend herself even if she lost use of the hand she favored. Adron took pride in his work and it showed. Once again Kendra was put through the paces; by now her face was red and sweat dripped down her forehead and into her eyes.

Everybody was watching them now; all could see Adron was not going easy on the woman. Even he started to work up a sweat and stepped back a few times while Kendra kept up with her attacks. Finally, after more than a few tries and misses she managed to flank him on the left and gave his shoulder a tap with her sword.
Adron motioned her to stop. One corner of his mouth twitched a little, she got a half-smile. “I am glad to see you have not forgotten everything I pounded into your head, girl. This will do for today, but we have to work on your form. You leave your side open, Kendra. Dismissed until tomorrow morning sharp after sunrise. We get you back in shape, woman.”

Kendra bowed, spoke her thanks and handed Ian the weapon.
The recruits watched her leave and started to whisper amongst themselves. They had not expected the new Captain to submit so easily to the same harsh training they had to go through in order to take on a mission. She would do, she would fit in. Adron must like her since he asked her back to train with him, not something everybody was lucky enough to enjoy.

So as the season changed from fall to winter Kendra continued her private lessons with Ardon and soon blended back into the everyday routine of the company. She started to train the new recruits who would soon join the ranks of the Archers and drilled with the existing ranks to get them back into shape and used to her commands.
It came as no surprise to anyone when Brom picked her for the mission to Luminii. She had earned respect in the Company and many thought it would be best for their new Captain to ease back into field duty with a cakewalk mission to Ashwood.

All they had to do was deliver a few goods to their point of contact in Ashwood, a Merchant Brom knew well, and turn around to head back to Dreven. His next shipment back to Dreven was not due till Blossombud, so Kendra and her companions were spared the agony of protecting a slow wagon train back to the capital of Shadokhan.
Kendra hated staying with the wagons, preferring fast-moving assignments.

The weather turned and forced the travelers to seek shelter for the night. At first only a little snow started to dance down from the winter sky, but soon the wind started to pick up and blew fiercely across the frozen countryside. In a matter of minutes it got quite difficult to see. The trail in front of them started to disappear under a dense white cover and the wind kicked up the snow which had fallen in the days prior. The men took it as a sign of whatever gods keep an eye on them that they were lucky enough to stumble on to a village large enough to sustain an Inn. Kendra was exhausted after the long, hard ride and welcomed the possibility of a hot meal, a dry bed and rest for the horses. She was still getting used to long days in the saddle; extended riding was not something she had done in the last few years.

The road was deserted as they rode toward the Inn, which was located in the middle of the village, and they turned into the small courtyard between the inn and the stable. Kendra did not think twice about the lack of people--who in their right mind would wander the streets in this harsh weather? Daren was the first off his horse and stepped up to Kendra's to allow her to dismount.

"Janus, see if you can raise the keep. Tell him we need room and board for four and somebody to take care of the horses for us." Kendra sent the man to her left up towards the backdoor of the Inn before she stepped next to Daren and Kilmek.

"Just our luck for the weather to turn bad. If we leave early in the morning we may make Ashwood by tomorrow night." Both men nodded in agreement and started to unpack the horses. Kendra reached for her saddlebag and tossed it over her shoulder.

It took only a few minutes for Janus to return with the Innkeeper, a scrawny old man, and also with a young man who turned out to be the stable boy. The kid ran over to Daren and Kilmek and helped the men to settle the horses for the night. This allowed Kendra to negotiate with the Innkeeper for room and board for herself and her companions. She was a little surprised how quickly the Innkeeper agreed on a price; business must be slow in this part of the land during this season. He was more than eager to please his new guests. Kendra even managed to get him to include warm baths in the price. She knew it would be appreciated. Janus had been complaining about the cold and a hot bath would ease the pain in his bones.

The burning fire in the inn's commons was a very welcome sight. The elf chose to keep the hood of her cloak over her head as she stepped inside. A scarf was wrapped around her neck so only a few of her features could be made out by the few patrons who had gathered in the inn on this cold night. Kendra was the first to take a bath; her men insisted on it. She followed the maid up the stairs to the common bathroom. The Innkeeper would make sure food and hot tea would be served to her companions while they waited for their turn.

Kendra chased the maid out of the room before she started to unwrap herself from her clothing. She did not wish to scare the poor girl with all the weapons she had hidden under her cloak. Let them think she is on a little trip and the men are her protectors. She pondered how to explain an elf and three humans as companions.

Maybe it would be best to politely ignore this question if it came up. People should be civil enough to know not to stick their noses into the business of others, she thought as she let her slender body slip into the warm waters of the bath. She wiggled her toes, leaned back and let her thoughts drift for a moment or two before a knock on the door returned her to reality.

The knock on the door startled her and she sat up in a hurry, sending the lukewarm water over the rim of the small tub.
"Miss, Miss, would you like some more hot water to warm up your bath?" It was the maid outside the door who had startled Kendra.

"Oh! Oh, no thank you. I am almost done. I will be right out and you can get it ready for my men."
Flustered, Kendra stepped out of the tub, very careful not to slip in the spilled water. She listened as the maid moved away from the door and down the hall.
She gathered her things up and got dressed again. Did she really almost fall asleep in the warm waters? This was bad, very bad, for not only could she not hear if anybody walked up to the room, she had also let her guard down.
"I am still not in the right mind-set. Kendra, stop playing, you are responsible for your men." She scolded herself.
"What was I am thinking jumping into this again after being gone for ten years?"

Kendra joined Daren and Kilmek at a small table in the corner, away from the regular patrons. She could feel the stares, hear the whispers exchanged from the moment they caught a glimpse of her.
"I think it is best if I hurry with my dinner and head back upstairs,"
Kendra spoke softly to her companions. "I think our presence causes quite a stir in this little town. I cannot shake the feeling of not being welcome."

Daren lifted his head and glanced over his shoulder.
"From what Kilmek and I could pick up in their conversation they are all farmers. Most of the craftsmen must have left for the bigger cities. Sounds like the harvest was fair this year."
Kilmek nodded and added, "I heard about more day laborers coming down from the north. It looks as if the undead are coming across the borders again."

"Is this so?" This caught Kendra's interest." Maybe you should see if you can find out more about this, Kilmek. Let me head upstairs and see if you can join them for an ale."
She pressed a few coins into his hand. "Here, this should cover a few rounds of ale. It may loosen their tongues."

She pushed the chair back and stood. "Now, if you'll both excuse me, I am weary from the travel and will retire for the eve."
Both men stood up as well, to protect the illusion of being her guards. Kendra turned without another word, as if they were dismissed for the night, and headed for the upper floor.
Maybe Kilmek could gather some stories tonight. She would like to find out more about the real state of affairs in Luminii, not the false tidings which were spread in Dreven to keep the new ruler in a good light.

"You're sure of this, Kilmek?"

"Aye, many lost loved ones in the raids from Balthazor. A token force was sent to contain the problem, but it has solved nothing for the poor farmers near the border."

"I never thought I would say I miss the Necromancers' rule." Kendra shook her head a little and looked on to the trail ahead of them. They had taken their leave early in the morning. The men had arranged with the Innkeeper for some provisions for the last leg of the journey and without a hitch they had gone on their merry way.
No one besides the Innkeeper and his hired help had seen them off; not a soul had been outside even after sunrise. Kendra always thought of villagers as a curious bunch, eager for some gossip from the big cities. Something must have frightened them off in the past.

"We should make it to Ashwood before Sunset, Captain, if we keep up the pace," Janus commented as he moved his horse next to hers. He looked over to the elf.
"Have you met the merchant in question before?"

"Nah, I have not Janus. But I put my trust in Brom, he seems to know him well enough. And he must trust Brom enough to sell his wares in Dreven for him."

Janus nodded in agreement. Kendra sent a little smile his way.
"Should we move on, old man?" She grinned at Janus. "The sooner we get there the sooner you'll get a hot meal in that belly of yours."

Ashwood was in sight just before Sunset that same day. The little troupe checked in with the local militia as a sign of courtesy before they headed deeper into the city. Kilmek volunteered to set the lodging up at the Inn while Kendra led the other two men towards the residence of Dorian Kultar, the goal of their journey.
Kendra breathed a sigh of relief and gratitude for the safe and uneventful journey. No bandits on the way, no roaming gnolls and no contact with any of the Klockmasters thugs.
The easy part was about to be over.

The elf was impressed with the estate of the merchant--everything was tasteful, modest and clean. It was good to see the man had good earth sense and it showed in how he took care of his people and holdings.
The welcome was warm and small talk took place as Kendra handed over the saddlebags. She held on to the sealed note for just a few more moments as she listened to Dorian banter with Janus. Janus had been with the Company for years and this was not the first time he had dealings with Dorian Kultar. Both men were at ease with each other.
Dorian's oldest son took care of the saddlebag and its contents while the older man offered Kendra a seat by the fire.
"I am glad to hear your journey was uneventful, Captain Rulyar." He offered her a cup of tea.
"So was I, Master Kultar. All is accounted for, I hope?"
"Oh, of course, Brom has done well for us as I expected." The man smiled at her and settled down as well.
"I do have a note for you." Kendra leaned forward and offered the note to Dorian. "He sends his regards and asks for a small favor."
Dorian took the note and broke the seal. He read the note and closed it up again only to slide it into the pocket of his vest.

"I was just about to take my supper. Would you care to join me, Captain?"
He came to his feet and offered her a hand.
"I would like to, Master Kultar." She took the offered hand and rose as well.
"Janus, you and Daren should head back to the Inn. I may be a while." She gave the sign of all is well to Janus, who took the hint and excused himself and Daren.

Kendra joined Dorian in his private office and waited for the servant to bring a modest meal and a bottle of wine. Master Kultar closed the doors himself and turned towards the elf.

"You understand this is playing with fire, Lady Kendra." He reached into his pocket and opened the letter again. "It is up to you to find a way to reach Arboria and return safely to a harbor in Luminii. Am I not correct in assuming it is nearly impossible and mostly likely deadly to cross the Arborian Border, no matter where one tries to do so?"

"You are not mistaken about the fact Arboria has closed its border and is defending it with deadly force. But it is not impossible, so I would not call it a suicide mission just yet."

"Where would you dare to cross the border?"

Kendra picked up the glass of wine and walked over to the window to glance outside. She took a small sip of the ruby red wine, closed the heavy curtains and slowly turned around, rolled her shoulders back and lifted her chin just a little.

She strode towards Dorian and set the glass down on his desk. Something dark flashed in her large green eyes before she spoke again.

“Let me be frank with you, Dorian.” Kendra sat down on the edge of his desk and crossed her legs. “Where, how, who and when is not any of your concern. And just so we understand one another correctly, if you want to find out the wheres, whos and hows I will have to take this business somewhere else.”

She leaned towards him. In any other circumstance this may have been flattering for the poor merchant, but not today. Kendra’s mood had shifted from pleasant to intimidating.

“How do I know I can trust you with the details of a very delicate operation? How do I know a little treasure, your 10 percent of the goods, is big enough? Can I take your word for it that you will not turn greedy and set a trap for me?”

Dorian Kultar leaned back as far as his seat allowed him and swallowed hard.

Kendra slid off the desk and fetched her glass of wine again.

“My dear man, I understand it may be tantalizing for you to find out about all of this, but do understand I prefer to keep details to myself. The moment somebody’s life is in danger I get a bit touchy. One wrong word and somebody may pay with his or her life. Now, do you really want this on your conscience? I need your answer, Dorian--you do understand everything we bring is not illegal in Luminii or Dreven, it is just illegal to bring out of Arboria.”

He nodded.

“So do we have a bargain?”

“Aye.”

“Let’s shake hands on it, Master Kultar.” Kendra smiled offered her hand and, like sun breaking through clouds, she once again was a pleasure to be around.

And a moment later Kendra had her storage problem solved. How to move the goods would be the tricky part, but everybody needs little treasures.

"How long before we reach Port Ethralest?" Kendra called out to Janus. The other members of the Wolves had left the same morning but were headed to the North in Luminii. Kendra and Janus had taken the road south, down towards the coast.

"Should make it by late afternoon, if we keep this pace up."
Kendra nodded and let her horse take the reins. Once again she had chosen a more docile animal; it made a long ride more pleasurable, as it would just follow Janus' horse's lead.

"Now care to tell me a little more why we are heading south instead of back to Dreven?"
Janus was at ease with his companion. He had known her for over ten years, and this was not the first time the two of them had ventured out together.

"We are to meet with a Captain, Janus." She took up the reins and moved her horse up so she rode alongside him.
"You see, I had one of my brilliant ideas again and Brom agreed with me. We are to hire a ship, and sail it to the northern Arborian Coast. Load it up with wine and bring it back to Luminii."

Janus was taken aback for a moment. His mouth dropped open as he slowly turned his head to his right to look at Kendra.
"Just sail the ship around and load it up? You make it sound as if it would be an easy thing to do. Are they not watching the coastlines now? Kendra, is this not a little too much trouble for wine? Luminii has good wine. I have never heard a complaint about it."

"You drink ale, Janus! Besides, everybody needs a little treasure once in a while. We did not plan on making more than one run. Everything has it's limits and I am sure they would catch on very quickly if ships all of the sudden sail up and down the northern coastline."

He shook his head a little.
"Say, you have not changed much, Kendra. Still have your wild dreams and somehow you get Brom to agree with you. You are a bad influence on our General, you know. What is next? Trying to find out who is behind the Triad?"

Kendra flushed a little.
"Of course not! I am worried about the Triad. They may feel we interfere with their little dealings in Dreven. Why do you think we are shipping into Luminii?"

"Let's hope we do not run into trouble in the Port. I heard things, Kendra. Who knows? The Triad may be already working its spell here in Luminii."

"That is something I do not wish to dwell on at the moment, Janus. I want to meet this Captain first and see if he is willing to take the risk. If we cannot have him, this little plan of mine will not even get past being a grand idea."

Kendra slowed Snowfall down and found cover behind some bushes near the house in question. For the last three weeks she had heard rumors about young children disappearing from homesteads near the border town.

Smoke was rising from the chimney, the smell of roasting meat in the air. So somebody was home tonight. One small window in the front of the house and two small ones were located in the rear near a small broken down stable.

Getting closer to the back was no problem for her, she had dressed in her old dark green leather from her times as archer in the Black Wolves. It was worn in places but still fit like it did over 10 years ago.

After a few minutes of sneaking around the house she got close enough to reach one of the small windows in the back. Oh ever so close, she could almost make out the voices drifting from the large front room on the opposite side of the house.

Her fingers slide over the windowsill, she was stretching her body so she could stand on her toes. Maybe, just maybe she could risk a glimpse inside and see who was hiding in this shabby old farmhouse. She knew it's former occupants had abandoned the homestead over three years ago.

Her nose touched the dirty glass of the window, and all she could make out was a fire burning in the little kitchen area. Frustrated she lowered herself and took a step backwards. Maybe if she tried the front window. This way she would even understand the mumbles and laughter inside better.

Slowly she made her way around the North side of the house. Every step taken was slow and deliberate. Almost around and almost to the small window, the laughter which came from the inside of the house was growing louder with each step. She could make out five different voices, all male and all having a good time inside from the sounds of it.

Her final goal in reach she made a point not to step on a few branches which lay on the left. It would be better to move to the right, only a few more steps, but wait. Why was the dirt looking so fine and clean almost too perfect, but to late her weight shifted and her left foot came down, right into the rusty old fox trap underneath the small window.

She howled in surprise and lost balance falling backwards into the dry leaves. It did not take long before the laughter inside stopped, men came to their feet and headed for the door. Kendra pulled her dagger and made an effort to open the trap shut around her ankle. It was a lost cause. Soon two men found her and took control of the situation.

As the men approached Kendra, a white wolf wandered lazily out of tall grass that ended near the house. It sat down and watched the situation unfold.

A third man began opening the trap while the other struggled with her. She went screaming and kicking, tried her best to bite one of them as well.

As Kendra began to struggle, the wolf put its nose in the air and let out a bone-chilling howl.

Darn. The door was getting closer and closer. One had her behind the shoulders the other reached for her feet. The howl stopped the third man who turned and looked towards the wolf

As the man turned to regard the albino animal, an arrow struck him in the throat. He fell to the ground, struggling for breath, as a pool of his own blood began to form around him. Two more men stood inside the door, both alarmed as their friend fell to the ground.

The wolf came from its sitting posture and rushed toward Kendra and the two men.

Kendra used her good right foot to kick hard at the man at her feet once she saw the third going down. One good kick and the man at her feet got hit in his chest, causing him to double over. She yelled on top of her lungs for help, since it seemed somebody was close enough.

The tall grass parted again, and from it stepped a figure cloaked in dark, weather-beaten green, his face shadowed in the night. The darkness, however, did not keep the moonlight from glinting off the twin long swords he held in his hands. "Let her go and leave this place," a voice carried from where the figure stood.

Laughter was his answer as the tallest of the bunch stepped out of the house. "Ye know ye are outnumbered ... not fair, ya know, four against one." He also yelled at his own men. "Keep her down, would ye! How hard is it to hold down womenfolk?"

The wolf lowered itself down on its haunches and growled.

"Funny." The cloaked man began walking forward. "I was just thinking my odds were pretty good."

Both men stepped out and drew steel. "Come on closer and find out."

Kendra spotted her dagger and wished she could reach it. Her arms were bent backwards and pain shot down her back.

The wolf seemed to spot Kendra's predicament and stood fully, moving toward her dagger. He picked it up in his teeth, then rushed one of the men grabbing Kendra, dropping it from his mouth as he crashed into the man. The man's scream was cut off as the wolf's teeth sank into his neck. The ruffian reached for his neck and pulled on the wolf's ears while going down.

Something hard hit Kendra on the back of the head and she saw stars for a moment. Somehow she thought she knew the figure's voice.

The man continued walking closer. As he neared, they could see he wasn't a man at all, but an elf. "Three to one." He said without glancing toward Kendra, the thug and the wolf.

"Bloody hell it is one of them." One held Kendra and the other two charged for the elf.

The wolf calmly held the man's neck in his teeth as if waiting for him to die. His pink eyes shifted to Kendra, then to her dagger.

A deep breath out and she stopped to struggle against the pull backwards. 'Easy will do it,' she looked from the wolf towards her dagger.

Meanwhile, the elf grinned and fell back into a defensive posture. He easily knocked one sword aside, then the other. "If you're going to fight,
at least be coordinated about it." He kicked one of the men in the behind as the thug rushed past, unable to stop his momentum.

Coordinating was not something these men could do well. They were used to picking on smaller prey, things which could be frightened and snatched up in the night.

The man in the wolf's grasp went limp and the wolf let him go. Blood stained the white fur around his mouth as he slowly advanced on Kendra
and the man holding her.

The cloaked elf turned on his attackers. "Last chance to give up."

Red hot with rage the leader chopped at the elf in fury.

A sound came from the elf that infuriated the man further. He was laughing. He deflected one blow, then another, then yet another. "Should've given up." He blocked one final blow and twisted his wrist, locking hilts with the man. He easily drove the other blade through the man's shoddy leather armor and into his gut. He looked to the thug's companion. "What about you? Done yet?"

The brute holding down the lady started to get distracted as looked towards his friends. The wolf suddenly darted around Kendra and bit the man's leg. The smelly man behind Kendra let out a cry of pain and in reflex gripped for his leg. This was the chance she needed, she pulled her arm free and flung herself down to reach her dagger. Her sudden movement and the attack of the wolf threw the man off balance.

The thug facing the elf took the hint and turned as quick as he could. Maybe he could find refuge in the bushes near the house. "I suppose if I let you live you'll just hurt someone else." The cloaked figure pulled the blade from the first thug's gut, and sent it hilt over tip at the other man. It impaled him through his back.

At last, Kendra's fingers closed around the hilt of her dagger and she twisted under massive man laying on top of her. He was still busy screaming and kicking at the white wolf.

The wolf was also busy. He continued to rip and shred the man's calf to keep his attention off of Kendra.

She could hear a loud thud behind her, the elf's weapon had found the running man. The sound was followed by tearing flesh as the elf pulled his blade out.

Now things looked up for her, it took no effort to drive the steel into the man's eye.

Once she did so, the wolf let go. It stuck its snout in her face, and began sniffing at her.

How do dead things always end up on her? She rubbed the dirt of her face and her eyes focused on the wolf's. "I guess it is time to say thank you for your help."

The wolf's tongue lapped out and licked her face, then it ran in a circle and darted back to heel at the other elf.

Under normal circumstances she may have giggled at the wolf's action, but this was not the norm. She twisted and struggled and pushed the dead weight off herself.

"Still getting into trouble, I see." The elf said, still standing some distance away.

Once again she searched her mind, she knew this voice but she was sure she had not heard it in a long time. "Trouble? One might say trouble is my middle name."

"Dalma always did," the elf chuckled.

She was slow to stand up and careful not to put any weight on her left foot. Her ears perked up at the name Dalma. Things started to fall into place and she remembered. She turned slowly towards the other elf.

"Master Kaine?" Said very soft, one could tell she was surprised.

Her eyes drifted down to her foot and she tested it by taking a slow step forward towards him. She flinched a bit. The sharp pain made it clear to her that her wound would have to be taken care of, and soon.

He laughed as he began walking toward her. "Yes, Kendra. It's me."

"I guess I should consider myself lucky you happened to choose this part of the woods tonight. I've gotten soft." She let out a deep sigh and she set back down in the dirt again.

Kaine just chuckled as he knelt to inspect the fox trap. "Perhaps a bit."

"This is more than a bit. But you know me, sometimes I forget to think things through and just jump into the fire head first." She started to clean the wound out.

Kaine removed his travel pack and set it on the ground before him. He opened it and began to remove bandages and salves. "You're young. You'll learn."

"A few young girls have gone missing in this area. One a season would have not worried me, some run of for the city, but three of them right after harvest. It sounded to strange to me." She smiled at him and let him take over.

He applied one of the salves to the wound. "Was it these men, do you suppose?"

Darius, the wolf, lay down and rested his head in Kendra's lap.

"I think so. The homestead has been empty for years. All of a sudden five strangers chose to stay here hidden near the woods." Kendra's hand reached out for Darius and she started to scratch behind his ears. She missed being around them. She missed Brom's wolves and maybe even Brom.

The master ranger began to wrap the bandage around her ankle. "Well, we should check the house for sign of the missing girls, then."

"I was afraid people would start blaming our kin. You do know tensions have been building ever since Arboria closed its borders. Humans think we dine on their offspring's."

"I do. Don't you?" He grinned at his joke.

"I'll let you take the lead." She motioned towards the house. "I think I may take one second to stand up."

Kaine tied off the bandage and stood. He offered a hand to help her up.

She took the hand, she may be stubborn but not foolish. With his help she pulled herself up.

"Really, I wish we could have meet under better circumstances. But then, you know me. Drama follows on my footsteps." She grinned at him.

"Had you not been in trouble, Darius likely would've let you be and we would not have met. Perhaps it was fate." He chuckled and ascended the steps to the house.

"It must be. Some heroine I am, I need to be rescued." Could it be? She may have mellowed a bit over the years and found a bit of humor?

"Should we have a look?"

"Why not?" Kaine drew a sword and pushed open the door.

She asked softly. "Are things well with the Rangers? I have lost touch with many after the..." She thought on how to say this, "...after the fall of the emperor."

She stood behind him, would be safer this way. The door opened and they got a good look at the room. It was filthy, beer stains and old food all over the place. The smell hit Kendra very sudden and she made a face.

"We are surviving. Politics were never of great concern to us, as you know." Kaine didn't flinch at the smell, but instead just stepped inside.

She followed behind him. "Pigs," she mumbled under her breath.

"No." Kaine lifted a filthy shirt from a chair and inspected it. "Humans." He grinned.

The rest of the house did not look any better. But near the kitchen the pattern in the wall changed. A hidden room perhaps?

Darius moved past them and sniffed at the wall. He began scratching at it lightly with a paw.

Kendra recoiled. "Not all humans are pigs." After all, her friends and loved ones were not. She looked towards the wolf. "Hmm."

Kaine smiled as he remember she had many human friends. "No, but if all humans were like Brom and your friends, Arboria's borders wouldn't be closed to them." Kaine knocked on the wall. The resounding echo told him it was hollow.

"Aye." Oh so true, but not all humans could be like them. And he was right, there was a small room hidden behind the panel.

Kaine pushed at the wall but it did not budge. He sheathed his sword, backed up a few steps and lunged against it, crashing through.

Kendra flinched at the sound of splintering wood. And the wall gave away. Behind the fake panel was a small room. More like a cell and in the corner he could see two pairs of eyes, very afraid eyes and both heard some whimpering.

Kaine brushed himself off as he stood.

Both girls cowered in the corner. The last few weeks had been hell for them. They did not understand they had been saved.

Kendra leaned into Kaine. "You know, I hate to be right at times. This is horrible, they are so afraid."

"I thought you said there were three?" Kaine said in reply. He wasn't concerned with the girl's fear, only that they were one short.

Smoothing and taking care of frightened maidens was not one of her strong sides. She shivered at the thought of what may have happened to the girls.

"Maybe they know there the others are? You ask them."

Kaine moved and knelt before the two girls. "Um..hello." Children weren't exactly his cup of tea either.

Both of them started to cry.

"Maybe we should pull them out of this hellhole?" Kendra suggested.

"Sure. Perhaps we should have Darius bring them into town to make sure they get there safely. We'll likely be mobbed if we do it." He reached out to pick up one of the girls, but she started screaming, so he
stopped.

"I think you may be right." Kendra replied, since one of the girls was holding on to the wolf.

Kaine paused and sniffed once. Then he looked at the floor below his feet. He then shifted his view to Darius. "Darius, take them outside."

Kendra whispered. "I think they think he is a dog."

Darius ran around in a circle once, then stood on his hind legs and batted at the air with his fore paws. Then he barked like a dog.

Kaine just winked at Kendra.

She stood back and let Darius work his magic. The girls cried but one followed Darius, the other did not want to be left behind. So both took off after the savior dog and ignored the Elven, well, so long as they did not make any sudden moves.

"Smarter than your average wolf." Kaine chuckled as the girl's left. He pulled the sword from his belt and used it to pry up a floor board. He took one look and let the board fall back in to place. Even with his age and experience the sight nearly made him wretch. "That's where the smell is coming from."

The ranger quickly stepped out of the room.

Kendra took the hint and limped after him. It is best to follow your elders after all.

"The other one is dead. They hid the body under there." Kaine quickly headed for the exit and descended the steps.

Nausea took over for a brief moment and Kendra welcomed the cool night air. "Bloody pigs." She turned white and shook her head. "If I only would have moved earlier. I hate men!"

"Then you could have stepped in that trap two weeks ago and died, and no one would have found these two. What's done is done." Kaine whistled for Darius and when the wolf came near he knelt and mumbled a chant, then whispered in the wolf's ear.

She had to agree, he had a very good point. The pain in her foot reminded her. "I was foolish, I should not have come here by myself. But frankly, I have nobody else at the moment."

Darius ran off to keep playing dog as he led the girls toward the nearest occupied house.

"You are welcome to accompany me back to Dreven, if you'd like." Kaine smiled at her.

She lowered her head. "I left Dreven years ago. I left a lot of things years ago. I may find trouble if I return."

Kaine skillfully spun the sword once in his hand before he sheathed it. "Well, that's why I'm back. To take care of trouble." He grinned.

But what did she have to loose on the other hand. "Do you have a place to stay yet in Dreven? I do still know a few souls and I can find something for you and Darius."

"I thought I might stay at the Crosswinds, if it's still standing," he replied.

"Oh it is. You may even find a few faces you remember. Some things do not change, others do." The last said with a hint of bitterness, she was lonely but she had cast the die a long time ago.

"Indeed." He thought he could perhaps figure out the source of her bitterness. "He would've died in your lifetime anyway, Kendra."

"I know but he always holds a special place in my heart." She looked up to the sky. "Maybe I should ask to become your pupil, after all. I do not think my fate lies with a man."

"I would take you as my apprentice if you wish it. But do not make the decision out of despair, Kendra. You are young, yet." He smiled sympathetically. She was much as he had been in his youth.

"No worries my dear friend. I will go with you to Dreven. A change will do me good. If you do not mind having me, the pest, tag along for some time." She winked at him.

He chuckled. "I'll be glad for the company."
"When do you wish to leave?"
"Let's find a spot to make camp, it won't be safe here once those girls bring the town back with them. We can leave in the morning after you've rested your ankle."

"Good because you know I will need a few hours to pack. I am a girl remember." She teased. She chuckled and limped off after him.

He laughed. "Indeed. You've already forgotten your horse."

Toy

Reed 11th,
Somehow I finally came to the realization of my place in this world. I am nothing more than a pleasant distraction. Blame Bliss, she started this thought. She did ask if I have seen Mik, I had not ..not since the take over in the tavern, and after he had talked to Ami. So once again, I was a pleasant distraction from his former object of desire.
Men...maybe it is time to just give them all the cold shoulder.

Mordred

A kiss, I did agree to a kiss, and he paid for it. The lessons will go to his companion, a dwarf. Jarl has taught me a lot about his kin, I will do well teaching him, mostly because I have grown a bit more respect for their kin. He just better keep his hands of my backside or I snap the bow string in his face and cut his beard off with it.
Mordred has not forgotten about the silly kiss. I told Brom about it and he was rather amused by the idea. So much for a Knight in shinning armor, at least Xiph took my side and was rather offend by the idea of me kissing a Necromancer. So was I, until tonight.
The Tavern was rather slow, a pleasant change. Here I thought I could get some writing done. Will needed a new roster on which troops will come in to help him and his Knights. I made sure Asa and Abby get the coins and food they need to feed the man and was about to relax at the fire until we got two Patrons. Av'rahm and Mordred. It was a quite pleasant conversation at first, Av' left soon after and I was alone with Mordred. Of course the subject of this Kiss came up more than a few times, and I have to say I did my part in teasing him about it. I have to admit Mordred and I can have deeper conversations once I set aside just who he is. I went to get another wine at the bar, he was next to me, Asa left for the kitchen and and .. somehow I ended up pinned against the bar and him very close to me. The talk of him considering to bind me and carry me off into the night still make my ears burn. Wanting to know what kind of noises I would make late at night send my head spinning. Even if your lips brushed against each others, I still owe him the one kiss. It ended as fast as it had began, he bit me a good night and I went to find sleep alone, and still here I am up way to late remembering and wondering.

BWC

Brom for the first time since his formal pardon returned to the tavern. He looked at ease, and I think he was pleased to see our men side by side with the Knights protecting the tavern. I am proud of all of them, they all pulled through this hard time and stayed loyal to the Company and us. It is good to see Brom with the rest of his men, now he can finally settle again and help the Company to get back to their old status. He took the news about the Keep very well. I did noticed how quickly he corrected from his keep to our Keep. Yes, I help to earn it back but I do not want it. I did it for him and Ami, and for the Company. We need the place to heal wounds and rebuild. I just want him to gain some happiness back in his life. While he was pleasant and warmer towards me, he still did not even place his hand on mine. I am staying at the cabin for now, besides it is closer to Dreven and I will be seeing a lot of Dolek in the near future. Where is an offer coming my way I cannot refuse!

Money well spend?

Nisi and I had this fantastic wild idea of raising coins for the needy in Dreven, we wanted to make sure people are taken care of before the winter. Many donated very nice things and we also decided to give away talents people had.
Ami ended up owing me for a "favor" so I offered her up for an afternoon of light housework. Tieryan is very mad for me "selling" her to Dante, but Dante had this little extra. The bottle of wine, which will end up with Ami knowing Dante. He has a soft spot for his friends and pretty girls. Serves Ami right for trying to get out it of by letting Tier buy her. The two of them spend enough time together. I will never admit to her I was hoping Mik or Brom would show up to bit for me and the Archery lessons, of course I had to toss in a kiss and ended up being sold for a much higher price than Kai's stunning Gelding. Does this make a prime breeding Mare? Kai would say no, and Elven take to long to breed.
So who but Mordred outbids everybody else, I was hoping Dolek would win but I think maybe he was just trying to drive the price higher. He better smooth my hurt feelings with some cheese soon.

The dinner with Mordred was not an unpleasant affair, I will handle the lessons with ease. Why does an old Elf need lessons? I am sure by now he has forgotten about the silly offer of the kiss.

Life can be bitter sweet

I am almost all healed up and thankfully this means Motherhen Ami will find something else to do soon, while I enjoy her company and am thankful she is here to help me out, it is time she find somebody else to cook for. Oh and I do have a few news to write down. Xiph is a sweetheart as always. His smile just lights up the room and I enjoy his flirtations. It is strange how he can be so oblivious to all what has just happened in Dreven, maybe this is for the better.
Adron, Brom and Karsh are of the Treason list. The keep is coming back to us soon, we finally have our home back. I think I take my time to tell Brom has been given to me, he may take it the wrong way. Ami is still with Tieryan, maybe I have to take him more serious. Maybe this will work out in the end. I do not think Brom will be so happy about him, but he will come around in the end.

Mik is well, Ami talked to him the other night. Something he said makes me wonder. He said I do not belong to anybody, but myself. It did sting a bit. Does this mean he is off to get his sheep and it is the end of the story? Must remind myself I am being a blabbering Idiot again. Talking about blabbering idiot maybe I should gag myself at times. So, I had to open my mouth and think I can win a stupid bet and promptly lost. Now I am to have Dinner with Lord Mordred. Which is not the worst part, I can deal with him for a few hours, but I have to dress for a fancy dinner! The Dress is not the worst part, it is the getting ready for it, the teasing of the hair, the perfume and not being able to ride on a horse the right way. Teaches me right!

Rebels Creed The Aftermath

I'm drained. I do not know how much blood I lost. I remember I did take at least one Tinbox down, the sound of Golembane tearing through metal and flesh is not something one can forget so quickly. Just how many men were lost on both sides it still not known, and how many others in the streets of Dreven. Yes, on the grand scale of war this was not a bloody event. Quick, surgical and not a huge loss of life.
I will never get the smell of the sewers out of my boots, I may as well burn them.
Kai forced me to see a Vivo before he let me go retire to my cabin. I cried my eyes out for hours. Maybe I am in the wrong trade. While in the heat of the battle I feel no regrets for cutting down my enemy, in the hours after I have to deal with the strong emotions and the sharp pain of guilt for ending a life.
I lost Janus in the fight for the Tavern, he took a deadly blow aimed for me. He gave his life so I would be sure to make it to Dreven and aid Kai and Dolek.
How come the Bards always talk about the glory of Battle, and the honorable death of Hero's. While his death was honorable, it will not make him come back to stand once again by my side in the early morning hours to drill the new recruits. He will never sit down for tea with me and listen to me rant and rave over the last little thing which got under my skin. He will never make sure I am tight under blankets while we are in the field, as if I did not know it was him every single time who made sure his Captain was taken care of. Never again will I hear him laugh at Kilmeks silly jokes.
Tomorrow I will make sure all his affairs are in order. He has a younger sister in Luminii, I will make sure she gets his things and the pay we owed him. I am not looking forward to writing the letter to her. If I could bring it to her myself I would feel better but it is impossible for me to leave Dreven at the moment.

Mik got hurt during the fight in the tavern, maybe Ami has news of how he fairs tomorrow. I'm sure she went to see Tieryan, he would be able to tell her. He has to be well or Bliss will scratch my eyes out. I wish they would have already left for the bloody sheep's.
I need to rest or I never heal up again. Oh this is a night I could use some company, even only for sitting here and watching me going to sleep, it may keep the nightmares at bay.

Rebel Creed - Vaille

The ride out here was not as bad as I thought it could be. We did not came across one Klock patrol and Janus is good company. He is a smart man, he kept the conversation away from the Subject Brom, I am sure he did not fully believe my words this morning. I did tell him things were sorted out, so not a complete lie. As it stands everything dealing with Brom and I and the Company are worked out. Our personal life? I am not so sure. Yes, I feel for him as strong as I always have, but it is not hard to sense he is uneasy around me. This has been a very hard and lonely year for both of us. With him away from Dreven and me in hiding most of the time where was no time for us to even think about any romantic thoughts or touches. Blast, he may still be red hot mad at me.

It suites me well to have a chance to keep myself busy and not dwell on this. The meeting my brother Kai set up for us was successful and because of it the time is not running out for the Klock leadership in Dreven. With Will at our side, and Dolek and Kai oh so carefully setting the stage in Dreven nothing can stop this now.

I have to say I am very impressed by Will. To have a Knight of old standing by us is a true blessing. He is down to earth, serious about reaching his goal and liked by his men. I did senses a sense of humor, an added bonus. He will need this dealing with me in the next few weeks.

Rebel Creed

Beginning of Vine 1274

Fine, so this was one of the hardest letters I had to write.
Dear Brom...was not myself...hated myself..nothing personal..really I just went nuts on you. Just forget it ever happened.

Not really what I send, and not really what I really wish to send to him. I behave, for the sake of what is at stake at the moment. I cannot afford my feelings, my moods, my fears to take over and destroy the unity of the Rebels which took me so long to put together.

I'm not a silly little girl. Honestly, only on a bad day

End of Hazel 1274

I guess I had it coming. I really do not wish to put any blame on anybody but myself for losing my senses and being so senseless. This little episode truly was already hurtful enough for me and my friends and family.

My hands still shake trying to remember just how and what has happened to me. I can only explain it as being caught in a never ending nightmare, darkness and despair whispering lies into my head, being caught in free fall afraid to open ones eyes, afraid the truth would be more painful as old memories, scared to hit rock bottom.

Adron and North are blissfully ignorant to the fact any rash and idiotic action on their part would force me to go to the Klocks and take the blame, and with the blame of Rebel attacks like this would come the order to take off my head. I gave my word and I will stand by it.

Good to know who my friends, loved ones and allies are. Ami never missed a day to see me, Kai and his family made sure I was save from myself and others and took care of me, and even Jarl would not allow me to move without an escort. I am sure the Dwarves were not to happy to baby-sit an insane Elf all this time.

And thank you Kai for finally loosing your patience and shaking me back to reality.

Lost 2

My head is about to split in two! This morning I did not want to get up. I was woken by a bad nightmare; I dreamed Eliolas died in my arms.
Kai has not been here yesterday, was told something important happened and he is busy.
Is it so much to ask to send a simple note up to the cabin for Eliolas to find? I am really starting to worry about him, by now he should have come and see me.

The strange servant girl who likes to come visit me everyday gave me this medallion. I think I have seen it before but cannot remember why I think so.
Spend the rest of the day looking out of the window, hope Kai gets back soon so I can go outside.

Lost

(Ken's entries during her nervous breakdown)
Why is everybody so upset with me? All I asked for was ribbons, which would match the dress I had in mind for the wedding. Nobody knows where Eliolas is; I thought he was at the cabin fixing it up. Could he be with Brom on a mission?

Kai has a rather rude friend named Poll who claims to be a member of Kai’s family. I do not think so! Considering Kai has no daughter and Nisi would never look at that Thug, she has Rune anyway.

Headaches are getting worse by the hour. Kai has said I should not leave my room anymore. Wonder if I should tell him about my nightmares. Something about Mixed Mages, soldiers in strange looking uniforms and sitting on a mountain in the middle of the winter. The worst one was about Eliolas, I dreamed something had happened to him and he could not come to me.

I wonder where my little friend Mia is, she promised me cookies and tea.
